Bed Bugs

“Don’t let the bedbugs bite.” Bedbugs can be one of the more difficult insects to get rid of in homes. Once nearly eradicated in the early 20th century, these bugs have made a resurgence since the 1990s due to increased international travel. Remember, when young children thought bedbugs were a myth? Unfortunately, they are now a common problem in the United States.

Bedbug Information

Bedbugs are tiny creatures, almost invisible to the naked eye. Their skin is translucent until they have fed. Then they become swollen and reddish in color. These little bloodsuckers can survive up to two or three months without a meal. They can survive quite awhile in cold water; for days, in fact.

Bedbugs don’t usually travel in clothes while they are being worn. Our body temperature is too warm, and our clothes move too much. Mostly, they hitch rides in purses, briefcases, luggage and the like. They are common in hotels, and, as their name would indicate, they mostly like to live in and around the bed.

Luckily, bedbugs do not spread disease. But they do bite. While the bites are painless, at first, later they become red, itchy welts.

How to Get Rid of Bedbugs

Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of, and most touted home remedies simply do not work. High heat does kill them, so clothing should be washed in the highest temperature water possible. The heat of the dryer, on high, for 30 minutes, will kill them. However, what do you do about the rest of your home? Traditional sprays and foggers are ineffective. While heat will kill bedbugs, turning up your indoor thermostat or using space heaters will not. To kill bedbugs requires a temperature of at least 110 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 3 hours to kill these critters.
